Day 8 Monday June 14 Leaving Ohio Behind

As we prepared to depart for the next leg of the journey which will include crossing into Pennsylvania from Ohio I ran up to the office/store  to buy ice cream for the tonight's dinner. I also picked up some plastic place mats that have the Great Lakes on them and clearly shows the Erie Canal and Trent-Severn water system. It has been difficult to explain our journey to people who are not familiar (originally myself included). There is a group gathered outside on picnic tables having their morning Jo and telling fish stories. Looks like the local breakfast club. I joined in and learned about eating smelt, fishing for perch with shiners and was surprised to find out that goldfish are "perch with a sunburn", and so they tell me are pretty tasty.

After exiting the harbor, I get my lesson for the day.  Ron trains me to set up the GPS and Tiki Navigator on the laptop. Wild Goose II proceeds in calm seas and light fog.

A change in water color is taking place as we pass Ashtabula, it is becoming a very deep color emerald green. The bottom here is rockier and with deeper water, the color is amazingly clear.
The helm is passed to me as Ron does some engine checks, and makes some more adjustments on the shaft packing on starboard..

We cross into PA around 11:45AM and note that we have travelled 150 miles to this point.

Our original destination was  The Presque Isle State Park Marina so that access to the beach was easier for me to treasure hunt some more. I believe this will be my last opportunity to find glass and lucky stones. As we approach the park, Ron suggests we call Erie Yacht Club to see what they have available and it turns out to be a good call. We see Dave and Mary Carraci's trawler "Recession" and upon checking in with Rachel at the gas docks, we find out we can stay for 2 nights free of charge. EYC has a great dinning room, bar area, and open air dining if you please. What we gain in luxury will soon lead to a very long, steep climb to get to town and the beaches. Oh well, a little extra exercise never hurt anyone :)

We decide we will stay for at least two days so that Ron's now very swollen ankles and feet can get a rest.

Grilled chicken breast on the boat  with our never ending leftover spaghetti is the meal plan.

I send out request on SeaGlassLovers website to find the best beach here (I believe there are 15 total), and Marilyn responds with starting at #1 and praying for a west wind. Looking forward to going there tomorrow.
